Book Exchange: The Sun (Laura)

Dear Tina,

I loved your nod to Picasso in your last letter. It got me thinking about how prolific he was. I was looking at some of his work and was drawn to some of his art where he used the repeated image of the sun. He interpreted it with various mediums including ceramics, lithography, and paint.

Some examples of Pablo Picasso’s artwork in various mediums

I’ve been pondering Picasso’s quote,

“Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.”

During this dark, cold New England winter season I wanted to pay homage to my friend the sun that I miss so much right now. The sun is so magical in that Its energy fuels our planet, providing warmth, light, and sustenance to all living things. I always appreciate it as it’s the major source of our existence and life on Earth.

Throughout history, the Sun has been a powerful symbol of hope and positivity. It represents new beginnings, fresh starts, and the promise of a better tomorrow which seemed fitting as we start the new year.

Sending a little sunshine ☀️ your way!

P.S.

I made a gelli plate print for the background with built-up layers to make it look like it was old and worn. I was thinking about the room at the Picasso Museum that had all the old posters like we would see in NYC that get torn and damaged over time.
