Book Exchange: Silk Moth (Tina)

Dear Laura,

We have had an early spring and the garden has sprung to life.  Which also means the weeds. I had a fantastic experience while cleaning out the garden.  A giant silk moth landed gently beside me.  I glanced to my right and there it was trembling. It was about the size of my hand!  It was golden tan with beautiful touches of purple and emerald green.  After watching it for a few minutes, it took off and flew away as quietly as it appeared.  It was so big it looked like a bird in the sky! The technical name is Polyphemus Moth.  The eyespots on its two hindwings inspired the naming of it from the Greek myth of the cyclops Polyphemus.

While this may not visually relate to your last entry of this book, we have often created about our local nature encounters in the previous pages. Hints of spring will be there in Connecticut by the time you get this and perhaps you will be inspired by a nature encounter too.
