Book Exchange: Hummingbirds & Summer (Tina)

Dear Laura,

Have you ever heard of an electric eraser?  I came across an artist online who mentioned it so I went to YouTube to see how it worked.  I purchased one and have been enjoying exploring it.  It is excellent for erasing highlights in a drawing.  For this entry, I tried adding color with watercolor over the graphite, but it didn’t work like I wanted it to.  Rather than a light wash, it sat on the surface.  Perhaps the graphite makes it too slick? I added a soft layer of colored pencils instead.

My idea for this piece is a reflection on my Mom and her passing this past spring.  Hummingbirds remind me of her extensive garden.  She would always have hummingbird feeders full.  They would visit her flowers and the feeders all summer. They are feisty little birds at the feeders! My Mom was feisty too so it really is fitting. Ha! It is still a strange feeling to know she is gone from this world.  I am not sure that will ever feel normal.

I have seen several hummingbirds this summer around my home. I like to think these visits are her spirit stopping by to say hello.  They appear and disappear quickly, much like the ephemeral quality of the flowers in your garden.

Hugs, Tina
