I make the best use of my time…

affirmation—> I make the best use of my time

Hello friends!

I often wonder where my time goes. Like most people you can never seem to find enough hours in a day. At the beginning of the year I chose “I make the best use of my time” as one of my affirmations so I would be more mindful of how I was spending it. I am presently in what Tina & I would call the “sanding mode” with my work. We coined this term after watching a KiKi Smith video in grad school where she mentioned that there is always something to do when you are an artist, so even if you don’t have ideas there is always “sanding or filing” to do (she was referring to her sculptures).

Although I am luckily not at a lack of ideas, I have forced myself to stop, assess and reflect on what I am doing with my work, realizing this is a necessary use of my time. It has been good to lay things out and see everything together as well as add the finishing touches to some projects. I made a list of all the seemingly little things I had to do and realized that they added up to quite a bit of time. Although some of those tasks are not quite as fun as painting they are necessary to complete my projects and my craftsmanship and presentation is something I take pride in.

I have been carefully painting the sides of my paintings (something I procrastinate on) matching colors just so, hand stamping them, sealing them with UV protection, wiring, signing, photographing & inventorying my work. Phew! Now that I wrote that down I can see where my time goes!

When I stepped back to look at everything I was able to see just how much I had accomplished. I am really feverish to share it with you and get some feedback. Some of this work will be on view this weekend at the Hartford Open Studios (my first time participating!). I am curious, anxious and somewhat nervous to see how my artwork will be received outside of the Westerly/Mystic area. I have also spent some time working on my display and thought I would give you a sneak peek at how I think it will look:

*note the prints I have of some of my new work! HOT off the presses!
My new sketch journals!

If you are in the area I would love to see you in Hartford! I will be there from 11-5 Saturday and Sunday at Artspace on the second floor along with my friend Joy(Having her there makes me a little less nervous!)

Wish me luck!

  1. Wow! You have been one busy lady. Congratulations on doing the things that need to be done and inspiring us to do the same. You have a wonderful body of work to show for it.

    Best wishes to you,
    Stephanie (a fellow Flyer)

  2. GEESH Laura! You have been productive to say the least. You have been working so hard this past year to get your feet planted firmly on the ground with getting your work out in the world. It is no surprise that you are in so many exhibitions these next eight weeks. Celebrate all that you have accomplished Laura and enjoy sharing your work with your community. I know it will be received well.

And yes…you have used your time not just wisely but also with, what seemed like, joy and ease. Congrats my friend.
    hugs, Tina

  3. Steph, Thank you for stopping in! I loved how you said I had a “body of work” as this is what I have been hoping for it to look like!

Tina, I SO appreciate your never ending friendship, encouragement and kind words. I don’t know what I would do without our friendship and you putting up with me!

suzanna! I wish you were in the area too! Thank you so much for stopping in!
