inspiration, invitation and the art of Elise Morris

Dear Tina,

My friend Annie Wildey shared this artist, Elise Morris with me and I really responded to her thoughtful process. As seen in the video she uses her camera in much the same way we do for capturing inspiration. I was immediately drawn to her palette and have similar feelings about how the use of color can capture emotion. I strive for this in my work and hope it translates in a way that makes people feel happy when they see it. Elise also layers her imagery, adding and taking things away to offer a sense of discovery. I think we do this in our work but with different materials and imagery. She notes that the details in her paintings can only be seen up close, much like the tiny little details seen in nature when we zoom in. This is why I always long to see your artwork in person.

Here are a few more paintings in my “Joyful Simplicy” series. These will also be exhibited at the Hygienic Galleries, ART = GIFT show. The opening reception is THIS Saturday night. Lots going on in the arts this weekend! My friend Carol & I have artwork at the i5 Gallery’s holiday show which opens tomorrow and runs through Dec. 23rd. The show has an animal theme and a portion of the sales from the show will benefit CHAIN (Citizens Helping Animals in Need). I was honored to be asked to share my dragonfly paintings, cards, prints and wood squares for the show.

Annie has her open studio at the Velvet Mill Studios tonight and tomorrow. I will be going with Sue this evening and meeting my new studio mate, Maria there. Very much looking forward to seeing Annie’s work, along with my friend Dennis’s. Dennis has been creating dreamy abstracts that I am absolutely in LOVE with! Harriet Moore Ballard is another FAVORITE of mine! I love her use of color, line, composition and the intuitive nature of her work. She makes me want to smile and paint BIG!

I am hoping to have some new large and small pieces finished for my own Holiday Open Studio, December 7th & 8th. Here is a hint of some of the larger pieces I am working on….

think happy, be happy

That is all for now my dear. Hope your week is going well!

love, Laura

p.s. I almost forgot! I have been using my VERY limited graphic skills to create little visuals for my Facebook Art page. This one is the save the date I made for my open studio. I used the painting I started at your studio in Charleston for the background. The old sheet music in the painting made me think of my family Christmas parties and singing carols with my aunts, uncles and cousins. I wonder when we stopped doing that?
