News!

Dear Friends,

The next two weeks we will be resting and enjoying our time with friends and family.  Our regular posts will be here and there, but mostly eased up as we put our feet up and celebrate all we have accomplished in 2010.  We thought we would do a little review of our year, note our gratitudes for all the gifts we have received, and announce some good news for 2011.

First, let us announce our good news….

….our blog is being featured in the February/March issue of

Artful Blogging Magazine…..

Current issue in stores now..

We are DELIGHTED to be included in this publication along with many other artists and writers.

A sneak peek of our four page article will be posted in January.  You may pick up a copy of this magazine at Barns & Nobles and other book stores.

Now for our review of 2010 (phew, we can’t believe we have done all this):

  • Completed our two year COLLABORATIVE BOOK EXCHANGE.  Read more about that and access our pictures on that link.
  • Created 45 new VISION/REVISION photographic call and response projects.  We have created postcards of these images that you may purchase at our ETSY shop.
  • Started a new project titled WORKING TABLE that allows our viewers to step into our studios and see what we are creating.  Recently we have added this to include our postcard art making process.
  • Began a new project we are titling Two Artists: One Surface (T.A.O.S.). We expect to have this project ready for exhibition by next year at this time.
  • Opened an ETSY shop.
  • Engaged in two studio visits- both at Laura’s Studio (next up Laura comes to Tina’s studio in 2011)
  • Exhibited our work at two Open Studio Events at Laura’s studio in Connecticut

…completed, created, started, began, opened, engaged, exhibited….

….we are grateful for ….

A Bittersweet End

Four years ago Laura and I began sending artwork to one another through the United States Postal Service.  These were in the form of a simple postcard and served as a tactile way to communicate what we were doing in our studios.

Two years ago we began a book exchange to consolidate many of the ideas that had been generated through these individual postcards.  When we began the project we had only two rules:

1.  Complete one page with whatever artwork we felt moved to create.

2. Add a small image on the next page as a starting point (to elicit a visual conversation between us).  Look for these “lead-ins” in the photographs of our book at the link below.

The Book Exchange 2008-2010

Once I completed my page I sent if off in the mail to Laura.  When she completed her’s, she sent it back.  It went around like this about 26 times (sometimes we hand delivered it if we visited one another).

pages 28-29

The last two pages of the book (page 30 and back cover)

These last pages were recently created together while I visited Laura’s studio in July. We sat down one day and just observed, flipping pages and discussing our creative decisions.  We looked for reoccurring ideas, images, compositional choices, colors, and anything else that jumped out at us in this visual conversation.

At the beginning of the project it was our hope to see how this would get to the core of who we are and what we want to talk about as two artists working together.

Here is what we noticed.

…circles/cycles…maps…written words/notes….organic shapes/images…leaves…birds…duality~ outward/inward, revealing/concealing, public/private, exterior/interior…expand/contract (bird’s eye view to detailed microscopic view)…defining home…presence/in process/moments…spirit…sky…moon cycles…growth…time…

These observations and words were incorporated in the last few pages.  We worked side by side to decide how they were to be included in the visual imagery.  The last page represents the moon.  Oddly enough, when we would come together in the same geographical location it was always a full moon.

signing the last page

These reflections are informing our next collaborative project together we are titling “Two Artists: One Surface”.  This is piquant idea that we suspect will occupy our work together for many years to come.  Tomorrow I will speak more about this new collaboration.

Although this is a bittersweet end to a very productive project, we finish it having learned a great deal about who we are as two artists working together.  We move forward happily and celebrate what we learned through this process.  For further details on this process you may enter Collaborative Book Project or Book Exchange in our Search menu for past blog posts.

Cheers!

Tina

Book Exchange- Tina’s turn (the book is almost complete!)

Dear Laura and Friends,

You know, sometimes I look around at all the things I collect for my studio practice and wonder why I have all this “junk”.  Then this week I found the perfect item (photo below) for our latest ‘BOOK EXCHANGE‘ page, and I am reminded why I keep it all.  I have held onto these lacy leaves since I lived in Boston almost ten years ago.  They have surprisingly held together for this long through numerous studio moves.

This is a photo of the page Laura left me to work on (see the full post on her work HERE):

Sneak peak for Tina (click to enlarge)

I have to say this page was one that stumped me for a few weeks until I found these leaves.  I just couldn’t come up with an idea.  Does this happen to you Laura?

I decided to cut these leaves and glue them into the leaf shapes you left me.  I also added a drawing into the composition.  Different fabrics and paint were added to make the page come together with harmony.

This is coming to you in the mail in the next week.  We have two more pages until the book is COMPLETE!    This has been a two year project, if you can believe that.  Any ideas for how to celebrate this dynamic and unique piece of art?

Love, Tina

Hello Sweet T~

Do you have ANY idea how close we art to finishing our book?!?!? How long have we been working on it? I have to admit I did peak at your last post, you made it entirely too tempting! Seeing it allowed me to have time to think about it before it arrived. Often it takes me some time to think of how I will respond to the imagery so this sped up my response to you. When I saw your page I knew I wanted to add onto your tree and decided to play off the old book pages you used for the nest. I had an old book I was altering and painted a bunch of the pages different shades of green, blue and magenta before the book even arrived at my door. I also painted the background of the page to create a sky. Next I worked on carefully cutting out all the leaves in varying sizes and arranged them so they would overlap and pop with the subtle nuance of hues. If you want a surprise scroll no further as I have posted a sneak peek at your next page.

It will be fun to talk about this project as it comes to completion and see how the book format compares to our previous square exchange. I can’t wait to start  thinking about what our NEXT project will be! SO FUN & Inspiring you are my dear! xoLaura

p.s. I loved learning about the Cedar Waxwing birds that visit your home.

Dear Tina~

After seeing the next page of our book I realized I only gave you and our friends a “tease” of my last page of our book so I thought I would share some of my thoughts with you. Tina, on your last page you left me with a map, a moon and the bird for inspiration. What immediately came to mind was a birds eye perspective of the world, new moon, moon cycles, moments, our Folly Beach walk when I was visiting you, the energy of life, wholeness, unity and what lies above and below the surface of our lives. Trying to connect these seemingly random thoughts I continued the ocean and added the word “home” to the map, as well as a little island in the shape of “two” (look closely) and put a nest on the next page for you. This is all symbolic of how at home I am with you; our art and friendship. I can be totally myself and never judged. Thank you for our unique friendship, inspiration and love. xoLaura

Book Exchange-next page completed

*Don’t forget to leave a comment on our post “You Made It! Welcome” to enter our drawing for FREE ART.  Read the details on that February 14th post.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Laura-

I was going to write my post last night, but watching the Olympics was too much of a draw.  Did you see Lindsey Vonn win the gold medal in  womens downhill skiing?  Truly amazing!  And with a bum leg.  That, along with watching Shani Davis win his gold medal (men’s 1000 speedskating) for the second Olymics in a row, was too inspiring to type on the computer.  Their dedication to their passion is definitely something I admire.

SO, I do have good things to share about what I have finished and will be mailing to you shortly.  This is also a follow up to my Working Table post on February 2.  In that post I took a picture of the Book Exchange in progress.  I completed the next page  (please click on Book Exchange on the tab above to get the details of this 2 year and running project…for those of you new to our blog).

When I received the book and you had drawn a nest, I began brainstorming ideas on how to surround this nest in an outward motion.  A friend (thanks Deb!) gave me some antique books, which I proceeded to tear and glue in a circular motion.  With an Exacto knife I cut out tree branches, with handmade paper that looks like wood,  to create the image that the nest was resting in the tree.  I knew it needed one more thing, but wasn’t sure what yet, so it sat around for another week.

Then the waxwings came to town.

Every year Cedar Waxwing birds flock to our trees in the backyard.  Mostly quiet birds you would miss them if you didn’t happen to look out the window. It had just snowed the night before (the first in 20 years) and they were there to eat the fruit off our Bradford Pear tree.  I was lucky enough to get a few pictures of them.

100_9528100_9541

It was at this point I added the drawing of the bird on the book page.  It seemed like a good fit for what what going on in life at the moment.  Look for it in the mail next week.  Don’t scroll down Laura if you want it to be a surprise!

Book Exchange

Dear Friends and Laura,

Today I wanted to highlight a project Laura and I have been working on for almost two years.   Below is how we have described this project on our newly designed blog (4 days until we reveal it!):

Laura and Tina take turns adding to the book page by page.  It is sent from Connecticut to South Carolina and back again.   After creating a new page, she leaves a small image or object on the next page for the other as inspiration.  This allows for the artists to add, elaborate, alter, and create together but at the same time leaving space for one’s own expressive ideas and aesthetics.   Words and notes are often tucked into the artwork as the two artists explore shared authorship and visual dialog.

Click on a picture to see a detailed photo of each book page.  I will be posting the newest page in a few days.  I needed to stew for a bit on my page to see if I wanted to add anything before I sent it to Laura.

I wonder what projects you might have that spans over a long period of time.  Will you share it with us?

Tina

Were  you on the edge of your seats? I always am whenever I get the book in the mail from Tina. It usually takes me a few days (sometimes longer) to figure out how to respond visually to her image. I was thinking about the two of us together in our journey as artists, friends and collaborators. As I mused over the two woman she had collaged onto her page, I felt a universal, symbolic connection to timeless friendship. I wanted to show the sassy, whimsical side of our friendship by adding the red balloon (it shows through in the hole Tina cut into the page before~FUN!) and give a feeling of the energy that encompasses all friendship, transcending time and place. We are all surrounded by these gifts of love and just need to nurture them so they can take flight. xo laura

We would love to know your friendships are nurtured. Have you thought about this lately?

Hello my friend!

I am FINALLY responding to our book which has been sadly sitting in my studio waiting for some attention. I loved your last page with all of the stamps and layers~so colorful and alive! For whatever reason I felt stuck not knowing what to do next. It was like I wanted to let my thoughts travel, roam and dream, much like the places your stamps had traveled on their journey, yet I couldn’t find the time to get quiet and still enough to “listen” to the conversation within the image. When this happens I know I need to make the time to go to Bluff Point and just “be.” I always feel grounded there and was once again reminded of the importance of time for oneself as an artist. Hope you like! Talk to you soon…love, Laura

Collaborative Book Project

Well, our book made it to my studio after a little delay at the post office. Somehow the book got sassy on us and “required a signature” to have it picked up. It ended up being MIA for awhile so you can imagine my “EXCITEMENT” to know it wasn’t lost in the mail. I am looking forward to responding to Tina’s page. The variety of stamps she used made me wonder where our book has traveled, who has handled it and how many stamps we have used over the years of our correspondence. A LOT! ~Laura

Tina, Here is a little, bitty peak of my new book page. You had left me with the word “begin” along with a simple black and white leaf to embellish and add to. See our previous post HERE. I have been pondering this thought. Where do we begin? I guess you will have to wait and see…xoLaura

Tina~ Here is the book with your full image posted. Girl, you really make me want to get busy experimenting with transfers! This piece has such a unique feeling that you just can’t get with a photograph alone. It is worth the time and effort you take to create it. We have grasses here in CT, but not exactly the same. This image has had me looking closer all of the beautiful textures around me, once again rediscovering “place” like we did in our 2008 series. Maybe this will be always be a reoccurring thread in our work. More to come your way soon…L

Collaborative Book Project: Tina's Turn

Laura, I have sent out the collaborative book in the mail a few days ago.  The picture posted below is just a hint of what I created.  I wanted it to be a surprise when you opened the box.  I created a photo transfer for this piece.  I scanned in the beach grass (seeds in the Fall from last year) into my computer, printed it, copied it at the copy shop, and then transferred it into our book with Golden brand Matte Medium. Would you mind posting a picture of the whole page when you receive it?  Enjoy working on your page next!

Collaborative Book Project-Laura's Turn

Laura's new page in the collaborative book

Laura's new page in the collaborative book "Wish On A Dragonfly"

Dear Tina-

While working on the book I felt the hopeful wishes you have for your children. You are always ever present in their worlds and reflecting, which reminds me of the playfulness in life. A lot can be learned from allowing your imagination to win over your fears. Your boys imaginative game with the crane flies reflected this. It brought me back to my own childhood the fear my cousin Sarah and I had of daddy long legged spiders when we were growing up. When I would visit Sarah, we would get special permission from her neighbor, “Aunt Janie” to use her playhouse in the woods. This tiny, magical little house was set in the woods and we would imagine it was our “grown up” house. The only drawback to the house was that when it wasn’t used regularly other “creatures” would move in. The daddy long legs always made us squeamish. This memory made me wonder if we had created our own game about them.  What would happen if we made games out of our fears?

For this book page I was thinking about how linear I often am and how there are many “windows” into each of our lives, some more organic than others. Perhaps when we pause, we are able to find the marvelous, simple joys which lay beyond the strict panes of glass. Sending you dragonfly wishes…love you! Laura

LauraCOLAB2LauraCOLAB3This is what I have added to the next page for Tina to respond to.  Stay tuned!

CBP wish on a crane fly

Wish on a Crane Fly

Hello Sweet T,

The book arrived with much excitement as always, yet my attention was directed toward the final touches I was putting towards my art show. Only now do I have the quiet time I was craving in order to fully engage with the transformative journey of the book. I am posting the book as it arrived and will post another image as soon as I visually respond to it.

As I looked at the page, I was reminded of what I had written in dragonfly pocket I put on the page for you. I wrote how I wanted to spread my wings to expand my idea of what love and kindness meant to me. I also wrote how I wished to be mindful of  the “here and there” of our journey together. We are both present with each other, yet each leave a different life in another part of the country. Your unique perspective always enlivens my thoughts.

I love how you added the words, “wish, wish wish on a crane fly..fly fly fly.  It was fun to hear how your  boys made up a game about  all of the crane flies that have flown into your house. You go onto explain, “if they touch the crane fly (on the opposite side of the window) they can make a wish.” I appreciated how they made something  scary for them into something hopeful, like you mentioned. Maybe we as adults make the world too scary by not seeing the playfulness in it. We create our own realities in a way and can choose how we respond to things. Today I will look at how I can turn something fearful in my life into something playful. xoLaura
