Vision/ReVision Refreshed

Receiving something like this in the mail has always been a thrill for us.  This is how our correspondence and collaborative art began back in 2006.  All our work since: the squared postcard, collaborative book, Vision/ReVision, and Two Artists One Surface project have all stemmed from this enjoyment of a gift in our mailbox and connecting over a long distance through creating art.  It is hard to believe sometimes that we have been collaborating for six years.

In our recent visit together, we sat on the beach and dreamed about where we wanted our work to head in the future.  Our main conversation centered around the Vision/ReVision project.  We have stalled on it the past few months and wanted to identify why, how to move past it, or whether or not to abandon the project for a new one.  What we came up with was that this Vision/ReVision project was always a consistent way for us to check in with one another, see what the other was thinking, give feedback, and start conversations we weren’t having in our other projects.  With a new commitment to the Vision/ReVision project we started with “What do we want to learn about through creating this art together?”.  Being teachers for many years we both share the same philosophy of “teach what you want to learn”.  Why not approach our artmaking together with the same philosophy?

Through many ideas hashed out over the following days we settled on an idea that has us both inspired and refreshed.  We are going to focus this project on the idea of ‘home’.  Home for us is more than a structure we live in.  It is a metaphor for being at ease, loved, comforted, connected to time and place with a touch of nostalgia.  Home can hold memories.  Home shifts and turns with life’s wanderings. Home is a place our true selves are accepted and honored.

What to expect with this project:

  • We will post a Vision on Monday in the from of a photograph to start the conversation (along with some written thoughts)
  • For the next two weeks we will brainstorm, create, and respond to one another’s Vision on ‘home’ by creating an original piece of art.  This piece of art will be 5″x7″ and sent in the mail to one another (along with a written post on this blog on Friday/Saturday).

This is a slower approach to this project (previously we posted weekly), but we believe the conversation will be much richer.  So essentially you will see two Vision posts a month and two ReVision posts a month.

We are going to see where this leads us and will most likely be exhibiting the envelopes and artwork at our upcoming exhibit in Mystic, Connecticut in March 2013.  We are so inspired to get this started tomorrow!

Inside the envelope posted above was this beautiful collage created by Laura.  Look for more work like this in the coming month!

Only 5 more posts until we reach 100 for this series.  We may decide to end this project and pick up a new one in it’s place.  Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we celebrate this milestone in our collaborative work.

Dear Tina,

I am curious where you took the picture for your Vision as I find it interesting in it’s abstraction. It made me think of what is reflected both in ourselves as well as other surfaces. I know you have been taking pictures of the sky and land so I thought I would share this picture I took when I was in Aruba on vacation. The color was what initially reminded me of your picture. I then used my Camera Bag app to make it look vintage. I am always amazed by the way the clouds move and I liked the reflection of the palm tree against the sky.

Dear Laura,

Your Vision reminded me of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs of flowers.  In reading his biography I learned that in his early years he worked in collage and one of his main influences was none other than my favorite- Joseph Cornell.  I have never seen this earlier work and am currently on the hunt to locate the book that features it (it is listed at amazon for over $300.00 but maybe one of the university library has it).  He is so well known for his photographs that this collage work is in that giant shadow.  I will let you know if I find it.   Here is a little bit about him (from The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation website) for our readers who are not familiar with him:

“Throughout the 80s, Mapplethorpe produced a bevy of images that simultaneously challenge and adhere to classical aesthetic standards: stylized compositions of male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes, and studio portraits of artists and celebrities, to name a few of his preferred genres. He introduced and refined different techniques and formats, including color 20″ x 24″ Polaroids, photogravures, platinum prints on paper and linen, Cibachrome and dye transfer color prints. In 1986, he designed sets for Lucinda Childs’ dance performance, Portraits in Reflection, created a photogravure series for Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell, and was commissioned by curator Richard Marshall to take portraits of New York artists for the series and book, 50 New York Artists.”

Dear Laura,

I would really like to hear more about your Vision this week.  What in the world is that about?  I know there is probably some sort of logical reason for that can on the post.  Walking down to the neighborhood dock with the boys this weekend I photographed the geometric boards (and cast shadows) against the organic undulations of the ebb tide.  This is a peaceful spot I like to visit often.  The weathered boards and composition reminded me of your Vision this week.

Dear Tina,

Your Vision this week ironically resembles a painting I am working on, although there is “a little” more color in it than your image. This is a detail of part of it. It may change before it is finished but right now I have been having a lot of fun layering my paint with drips and texture.

Hello Sweet T~

I have been thinking a lot about how things grow (both literally and metaphorically) and I enjoyed seeing your Vision this week of the shadows. They made me think of how things grow and how there is so much going on all the time that we don’t always see change. My sweet friend, Kathy gifted me a vase with begonia cuttings before Christmas and I have enjoyed watching their roots emerge in the studio. It seemed like they sprouted them overnight! It is time for me to take them home to be planted and I will enjoy watching them grow. Isn’t nature amazing?

Dear Laura,  I thought your Vision this week fit right in with my studio work (and upcoming Working Table post) so I thought I would post an image of a work in progress.  I will be writing more about this process this week, so wanted to just focus on the photograph.  This photograph has a price tag on the back that says it is one penny.  I have stacks of antique photographs and often wonder who the people are.   One of my favorite poets, Naomi Shihab Nye, said it better than I would in her poem “Famous”……”The bent photograph is famous to the one who carries it and not at all famous to the one who is pictured.”

Here is her poem in it’s entirety.  Thanks for reminding me of one of my favorite poets Laura!   Tina

Famous

By Naomi Shihab Nye

The river is famous to the fish.
The loud voice is famous to silence,
which knew it would inherit the earth
before anybody said so.

The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds
watching him from the birdhouse.

The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek.

The idea you carry close to your bosom
is famous to your bosom.

The boot is famous to the earth,
more famous than the dress shoe,
which is famous only to floors.

The bent photograph is famous to the one who carries it
and not at all famous to the one who is pictured.

I want to be famous to shuffling men
who smile while crossing streets,
sticky children in grocery lines,
famous as the one who smiled back.

I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous,
or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular,
but because it never forgot what it could do.

Dear Laura,

Your Vision this week directly relates to the work I have been doing in my studio lately.  I have written about my ‘root’ series HERE and continue with this work today.  I have started adding objects and abstract drawing elements to the drawings.  I realized that drawing is more than just the traditional sense of pencil on paper.  Drawing for me is arranging my thoughts, with whatever material works in the moment, on a two-dimensional page.  I will be writing more about this in a future post, but for now just wanted to mention how parallel our thinking has been this week.

Dear Sweet t~

I remember your book sculptures greeting me when I visited you for the first time and I must say they make quite an impact all grouped together. Someday I will make a grouping of my own and have been on the lookout for the perfect books. Lisa Occipinti, a favorite artist of mine wrote a lovely book called, The Repurposed Library that I just love. It is filled with wonderful inspiration on repurposing old books. I find myself a bit nostalgic lately. My mother gifted me with a visit a few weeks ago and brought with her some old photographs of my grammy. They are the really cool ones with the deckled edges and tiny little squares with the white borders. I always had a deep bond with my gram and still feel her in my heart even though her physical self is no longer with us. I have spent some time pooling over them, sorting them and dreaming of what it may have been like to grow up in her generation. I have a bunch of transfers ready to go for some experimental new work that I am excited about. I am not entirely sure where I am going with it all just yet, but I feel warm in my heart being embraced by my memories.

xoLaura

p.s. In case you are in the New London area, the opening reception to the Hygienic’s Salon Des Independants is TONIGHT at 8 pm! I was there hanging my work this morning and I must say it is going to be one CRAZY, AWESOME SHOW! If you have been before, you know what I am talking about!

Vision 90

We have decided to leave out our written reflections on our Monday Vision post as we have done for the past 89 posts and simply post a visual image.  On Friday we will open up a written reflection to one another if we choose to do so.   We are curious how this may change the direction of this project and expand our interpretations of one another’s work.

The Vision/ReVision project will remain the same for the most part, but we thought we would mention this small shift that could bring big gains for our collaborative work.

Dear Tina,

I remember that day we laid out all of those squares. It seems like yesterday and yet another lifetime ago. I decided to share this picture taken of us at our Goddard Graduation. We were so alive with wonder and giddy with all we had accomplished. I know for certain that my life would not be the same without having met you.

I am REALLY PUMPED to work on our squares again! When I look back now at those squares I see how they always kept me thinking and exploring the world, inviting risks with my work, knowing you would never judge them and could see the “process”. It was something we did just for us as we tried to decipher our world. I am very excited about revisiting this endeavor with you and seeing the possibility of it all. At the end of the day I think we are always questioning, “What are we learning?” and “How are we growing?” both as artists and as beings in this world wanting to make it a better place for all. Don’t you think?

ReVision 89, Tina

Dear Laura,

“Timing is everything” as the old cliche says.  This ran through my head when I saw your photo of the lilies.  I see opportunities come and go (some with regret, some with relief, some with the joy of ‘I can’t believe that just happened to me’).  It is hard to make sense of it all on most days.  I just hope to be there fully in mind and body when those opportunities present themselves.  Maybe that is all we can control- showing up.

I took this photo at Caw Caw Nature Center, which is one of  my favorite places in Charleston.  My camera was actually cooperating and took a decent photo. This is also exactly the color palette I use in my own artwork.  Do you think our eye with the camera (how we make decisions to frame shots) is dictated by our individual color aesthetic?

Dear Tina,

Happy New Year once again! I bought a bunch of stargazer lilies for my New Year’s Eve party, hoping they would open up in time for my holiday decorating. In my mind they would be reminiscent of the burst of fireworks and would be festive for the party. They only started open in the past few days and I find my house filled with bursts of FUN! Although not the timeframe I had planned I am appreciating them now after all my company has gone home and I am left with the stillness of the winter. Nature is always a marvelous reminder that good things come in time. As I look at them I am slowing down, practicing patience and being still long enough to enjoy them. xoLaura

Dear Laura,

It is a new year and I wanted to remind us of our first collaborative project.  Do you remember lining these up at Goddard after a semester of sending them to one another.  I believe our next step was to make the book right? Last time we talked we had mentioned getting back into the habit of mailing small cards to one another again.  I can commit to doing this two times a month if that would work for you?  This was one of our most successful collaborations and why not circle round and see where it takes us this time.

Your Vision 88 reminded me of one of the last boat rides Brett & I took before we put the little boat away. The way the light found it’s way through the clouds was really spectacular! It makes me miss those hot summer days! Luckily we have been having some mild weather here in New England.

Dear Laura,

You have met my mischievious dog, El Segundo.  He was very annoyed that I woke him from his tenth nap to take this photo.  You can see it in his ears.  He puts up with us as much as we put up with him.  His latest antic was to steal a whole box of Wheat Chex, drag it into the back yard through his dog door and scarf it down.  The chex  got clumped together on the roof of his mouth (probably because he was eating it so fast so he would not get caught) which he couldn’t get off the roof of his mouth so continued to howl and stick his paws in his mouth.  I could write a book about his thievery.  You can see it in his eyes that he is plotting his next food theft. This is more of a mug shot than a loving pet photo.

Vision 88: Happy Halloween?!?!?

Laura's Vision 88

Dear Friends~ Tina & I have been a little behind in our Vision/ReVision posts. I thought I would “trick” you by posting this. It somehow got overlooked on Halloween and I am a big fan of the holiday so I am posting it anyway as I feel most holidays are too rushed.

Happy Belated Halloween & Happy Thanksgiving as well!

We are GRATEFUL for your kindness and support today and ALWAYS!

Dear Tina,

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

I don’t know if you know how much I LOVE HALLOWEEN?!?!? but I DO! I took this picture of Skye, my sweet little girl perched where she shouldn’t be on one of our tables. I thought she looked ghoulish with the ghosts behind her…whOOOoooaaaa haaa haaa! Don’t be scared! xoLaura

p.s. I altered this using the camera bag app~fun!

Dear Laura,

This photograph was taken by my son Olin.  We were at the beach as the sun was setting.  I like the suggestion of the horizon line at the bottom of the photo with the subtle colors of the day ending.  There is something about the Fall that always seems to have amazing sunsets.

Hello Sweet T~
I still don’t know for sure whether we have seasonal fishing around here but “the word on the street” is no. (Do any of you lovely readers know?) This picture doesn’t have anything to do with fishing but it made me look closely at the lily pads and wonder what goes on under that water in the winter. I have heard frogs freeze in the water but I am not sure if that’s true. At any rate it goes along with my thoughts on a new series I am working on that I will share soon. Happy weekend! xoLaura
Dear Laura,
Banana Bread  from the kitchen of Therese Korey
1 3/4 c. flour
2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
1/3 c. butter/shortening
2/3 sugar
2 eggs
2-3 bananas
Sift together first four ingredients.  Beat butter/shortening and sugar until fluffy.  Add eggs and beat well.  Add flour mixture alternately with bananas.  Beat until smooth.  Put into greased 9″x5″ pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes.  Cover with foil the last ten minutes if it is getting too brown.  Cool in pan for ten minutes then remove.
Enjoy!  Tina

Dear tina~

I had a productive weekend in the garden moving things around, planning for next year and digging up plants to share. It felt great! I also was lucky enough to be a part of a great printmaking demo given by the fabulous Carol Dunn where I learned about solar print etching~so cool! For whatever reason I have been itching to bake which I rarely do mostly because I don’t like to have sweets in the house due to my sugar addiction. I wanted to make something healthy so I decided to try Jillian Michael’s harvest pumpkin muffins. They came out great and I even got Brett to try them–he didn’t die~ha! AND I think he would like them again! The house smelled so good and fostered the fall vibe in the air. Here is to embracing the season!

xoL

p.s. I have been given some great recipes lately and wondered if any of our readers had any healthy fall favorites to share. Who knows, maybe I will be inspired to bake again in this century! Ha!

Vision 87 Tina

Dear Laura,

We had a beautiful weekend spend camping on Edisto Island, SC.  Off the shore were numerous shrimp boats working around the clock.  The dolphins and birds hung around to get an easy meal while we were able to see some interesting wildlife.  It made me wonder if you have seasonal fishing boats out on the water this time of year.  Maybe the water is too cold already up there?  Fall has certainly arrived here.

Dear Tina,

I saw this little bird perched in this tree while on one of my walks and love how it blends in with the bark. It reminded me of the beautiful root drawing you shared this week and got me looking closer at the complexity of the tree branches. I noticed how similar they were to your roots. Isn’t nature amazing? There is so much we can learn by slowing down and paying attention.

Dear Laura,

I stepped outside into the cool morning (I turned my heat on for the first time) and took a quick picture of the moon rising. I altered it a bit in Photoshop to see if I could get those green tones like you did.  It came out with a grainy gritty look.  Now as I sit here an hour later writing this, the sun is up and the air quality seems different- clear and open.  I really liked that photo you took for our Visions this week.  Enjoy the weekend, T.

Dear Tina,

This morning I was awoken to the most magical sunrise out of my bedroom window. If I had taken a picture of it, it would have made for an interesting contrast to my Vision of the moon this week (a picture I took last night). I think fall has been putting on an amazing show to transition me into the cooler weather. I am receiving each gift with open arms and find myself in awe and alive to the wonder of it all. In search of more remarkable moments this week…xoLaura

Dear Laura,

I thought I would post a drawing I am working on for our Vision.  Perhaps it will spark something you see this week.  I am not finished with it yet but feel close enough to share this photo with you.  As I had mentioned in my Working Table post this past week, I have been drawing the roots of the weeds I have picked out of my garden.  It is a simple drawing of a simple subject.

Tina

Again, I gotta apologize for the indecent photo. I am pretty sure my camera is just about dead.
